OTOY has launched OctaneRender 2026.1, an alpha version of its GPU-powered production renderer, offering a first look at experimental features set for future releases. This alpha version arrives alongside OctaneRender 2025.1, which represents the next stable, production-ready update, highlighting OctaneRender 2026.1’s focus on testing emerging technologies.

| Key Features of OctaneRender 2026.1 Alpha

The OctaneRender 2026.1 alpha introduces several noteworthy features, including:

Native MaterialX Support: OctaneRender 2026.1 integrates MaterialX, an open standard for materials that is becoming increasingly prevalent in VFX workflows. This feature aligns OctaneRender with other industry-standard renderers like Arnold, RenderMan, Houdini’s Karma, Unreal Engine, and V-Ray.

3D Gaussian Splats: This alpha version also adds support for 3D Gaussian Splats, a cutting-edge 3D scene reconstruction technology gaining traction in both VFX and architectural visualization, and currently supported by V-Ray. Both MaterialX and 3D Gaussian Splats were initially slated for the OctaneRender 2024 release.

Other features in this release include real-time shader-based displacement, a new Neural Radiance Cache system, and enhanced trace set support.

| Planned Features for Future Updates

While the current alpha includes several new capabilities, key features are scheduled for future updates to OctaneRender 2026.1:

Meshlet Geometry Streaming: This much-anticipated feature, described as “Unreal Engine’s Nanite for path tracing,” has been delayed multiple times, originally planned for Octane 2023, then re-announced for 2024. It promises a significant boost to geometry rendering, offering path tracing optimizations for high-density meshes.

Neural Rendering: Otoy also plans to integrate neural rendering, which will allow users to run machine learning and neural filters either locally or through the Render Network. This feature is expected to further enhance rendering capabilities and efficiency.

| When Will These Features Be Production-Ready?

OctaneRender 2026.1 marks the first time Otoy has released an alpha preview so far ahead of a stable version. As such, it is challenging to predict when these features will be production-ready. Additionally, some features, such as the meshlet streaming system, have been delayed over multiple release cycles, so it remains unclear whether all features will be fully integrated by the final 2026 release.

Given the experimental nature of this alpha version, OctaneRender 2026.1 should be seen primarily as an opportunity to explore Otoy's ongoing development of innovative technologies. We will continue to provide updates as these features approach finalization and stable release.
