SideFX, in collaboration with the esteemed VFX artist Andreas Weidman, has publicly released the Project Greylight toolkit, which is now available for free download and designed to facilitate USD-based collaborative multi-shot workflows within the Houdini software environment.
This comprehensive toolkit is comprised of five Houdini HDA (Houdini Digital Asset) files, accompanied by a fully functional demo project and a series of ten detailed walkthrough videos, serving as invaluable resources for users to understand and implement the provided tools effectively.

Andreas Weidman, a recognized Solaris pioneer and currently the VFX supervisor at dupe, spearheaded the development of Project Greylight during his tenure at SideFX. His prior professional experiences at renowned VFX facilities such as Goodbye Kansas Studios and Important Looking Pirates have endowed him with a wealth of industry knowledge and technical acumen, positioning him as one of the early trailblazers in the realm of Solaris – Houdini’s USD-based shot layout and look development environment, which has been successfully integrated into production pipelines.

Project Greylight is strategically crafted to address the needs of students, independent artists, and studios with an exploratory mindset, by presenting a collaborative VFX workflow that obviates the necessity for complex custom pipelines or elaborate content management systems. It offers a suite of highly efficient tools engineered to optimize multi-shot workflows within the Solaris framework, incorporating features such as USD department layers for enhanced organizational structuring, date-based USD layer version control to ensure seamless asset management, and automatic render versioning for streamlined production processes.

The official project website hosts a collection of ten meticulously crafted video tutorials, which comprehensively cover fundamental USD concepts while providing step-by-step guidance on leveraging the toolkit to its fullest potential. The core components of the toolkit, namely the five custom tools encapsulated in HDA format and the demo project replete with ready-to-use source assets.

Notably, despite its initial development focus on VFX applications, the versatility of the Project Greylight toolkit renders it suitable for utilization in motion graphics projects as well as in the production of games cinematics, thereby broadening its applicability across diverse digital media domains.
