XRender: Hi, Li! Thank you so much for accepting our interview. Could you please give a brief introduction about the role you played in Jade Dynasty?
Li: I’m the VFX Supervisor of Jade Dynasty, is mainly responsible for the visual effects of the film related to all aspects, including prophase filming and post-production, the specific point is according to determine the preliminary effects taken picture, and guarantee in limited production cycle for the whole postproduction team can fully in the production according to the director the thoughts and intentions of picture to better fit the plot development and needs.
XRender: With so many changes in the various fairy tale scenes and mythical beast characters in the novel, could you tell us about the visual effects of the film.
Li: We produced a total of 1,300 special effects shots for the film, which basically accounted for about one-third of the entire film. In fact, the cycle of the entire project is not too long, although our visual effects team took part in the entire shooting process, there were still many uncertain factors, which led to a sharp increase in the number of 3D assets. It can be said that our 3D asset link basically started at the same time as the shooting. Time was indeed really tight. In the current film industry processing progress, "post-production" is very important, so our pre-production (storyboard, concept map, 3D preview) team has been involved before the filming starts, try to make important scenes in a limited time, making the formulation of the shooting plan more complete and more efficient.
XRender: What do you think is the biggest challenge? Can you tell us about the story behind the scenes?
Li: There are many things that cannot be perfect. We must balance many things with time and visual effects, and many compromises will be made. The Qingyun Mountain environment part, for example, the effect the director waned is a feeling between humans and wonderland, but also required a sense of reality, which is actually not easy. And the cloud has always been a problem that has not been solved in special effects, such as the long rendering time that makes people collapse. In the pre-concept stage, we drew a lot of conceptual renderings for this purpose and tried a lot of production schemes to finally show the ethereal Qingyun Mountain in the film. CG characters (including humans and creatures) are also a difficult point in the production of this film. We scanned and produced digital character stand-ins for almost all the main characters in the film, because the director has a lot of ideas and requirements on the actions of the characters and many actions is impossible to achieve in real life.
XRender: How do you feel about the cooperation on 3D render with XRender?
Li: Rendering is a very important part or post-production about visual effects. I believe everyone knows that the rendering of complex special effects environments and fluids are very time-consuming, and it is extremely error-prone. If it is not discovered and processed in time, it will cause great resource waste. And XRender did a really great job. The 24/7 service team found out problems in time and cooperated with us to solve them as soon as possible. I am very grateful for XRender’s contribution to this film, which ensured us a more secure guarantee to have a good production cycle.
