| What is hdRstr
Released by developer Stefan Krake, hdRstr is a “ReSTIR/RTXDI-based hydra render delegate” that helps creators to edit and view deal with “Tens of thousands” of area lights and see the approximate rendering results for animation and vfx projects in the viewport in real-time.
hdRstr is designed based on the RTXDI, Nvidia’s new direct illumination system for GPU ray tracing, simulating more realistic direct lights for environments photorealistic visualization.
In addition, ReLAX, one of the NVIDIA Real-Time Denoiser (NRD) in Nvidia’s API-agnostic spatio-temporal denoising library, is used in the software to offer substantial improvements to image quality and performance over stock SVGF.

The plug-in is mainly used to provide a high-speed real-time preview when editing direct lighting from tens of thousands of lights and meanwhile, an option is available for 1-bounce indirect lighting accelerated with ReSTIR.
hdRstr supports USD, an open-source software that satisfies the need for robust and scalable exchange and enhancement of arbitrary 3D scenes that may consist of many basic assets by Pixar, with some difference for Houdini and Maya.
In Houdini, hdRstr can be used as part of a USD workflow since Hydra render delegates are only supported inside Solaris. As for Maya, it can be used as a replacement for Viewport 2.0, even for non-USD-based workflows.
hdRstr is currently available as a free open beta for Houdini 18.5 and Maya 2022+ on Windows 10 only. And the commercial release schedule can be seen in the form below.
