Originally released on August 6, 2020 and with the update 1 - update 1.2 announced from June to September, 2021, Chaos has unveiled the latest Maya edition of its renderer version, the V-Ray 5, update 2 for Maya on November 11. The updating gives support for several 3d creation parts, bring users smoother creation workflow and richer design resources.
| Initial support for Pixar's USD format
The biggest step forward of the V-Ray 5 for Maya should be the support for USD, the Pixar's Universal Scene Description. Users with V-Ray for Maya can now load USD files in Maya via the new Maya USD plugin bundled with the software in Maya 2022, and render them in V-Ray with mayaUsdProxy nodes.
In addition, with the support of USD for V-Ray 5, static and animated meshes – both transformations and deformations – and V-Ray materials, textures, displacement and subdivision encoded into USD files are now available in Maya 2022. For more details about USD for V-Ray 5 in Maya, please read Chaos Doc: Universal Scene Description in V-Ray for Maya.
| V-Ray 5 for Maya - Update 1
V-Ray 5 for Maya, update 1 was released on June 17, 2021, with the update 1.1 released one month later. The two subsequent software updates have also added and optimized multiple functions including:
V-Ray Material Library Browser that consists of a toolbar with quick search and filtering options, preview section for high quality material previews and the V-Ray Material Library with render-ready textured materials.
Opacity Cutout Conversion to speed up rendering of cutouts as actual geometry. The workflow, which is intended mainly for use with opacity-mapped leaves on 3D plants, preserves instances, transformation and deformation, but currently only works with native Maya meshes.
Other new features such as a new VRayMtl translucency for more intense effects simpler UI, progressive caustics for easier set up, improve out-of-core for all GPU features and calculate light cache on GPU to boost your V-Ray rendering are all originally introduced in V-Ray 5 for 3ds Max Update 1 earlier this year, which you can read the announcement for more information.
| V-Ray 5 for Maya - Update 2
V-Ray 5 for Maya, update 2 was released on November 12, 2021. New features including:
A new decal system that first introduced in the 3ds Max edition of the renderer is now available for Maya. users now able to apply decals to any surface without the need to set up or modify UVs for a mesh. Users can control where the decal texture appears in the scene by using a viewport gizmo to adjust its position, size and angle making it easy to add stickers, labels, cracks, stains, scratches, and so on.
The Cosmos Cosmos are now accessible easily with a new asset browser added to the latest version, with 200 new materials to bring users more resource such as free 3D models, materials, and HDRIs.
In addition, Chaos has extended USD support in the update 2, adding the option to render USD lights, to export V-Ray lights to USD and preview USD files in a VRayScene node in Viewport.
For more updating information such as Blur and Sharpen in the VFB, new creative lighting possibilities unfold as light sources can now be used within the VRayInstancer and batch rendering with Chaos Cloud, please check the announcement of update 2.
