Autodesk has released the online documentation for the new features in 3ds Max 2025.1, the latest iteration of its 3D modeling and rendering software. This update introduces the Turbulent Color Noise OSL shader and primarily focuses on enhancing workflows, particularly with updates to the Array and Boolean modifiers, as well as improvements in skin weight painting.

As of now, Autodesk has not specified a release date on its product timeline, but the documentation indicates that the update is available to subscribers.

| 3D Modeling and Layout: Enhancements to Boolean and Array Modifiers

The Boolean modifier now includes significant workflow improvements for volume meshing, allowing users to utilize keyboard shortcuts to adjust the Voxel Size sensitivity and to cancel volume meshing by pressing [Esc].

Meanwhile, the Array modifier, which facilitates the creation of 3D object arrays, now supports animation of random number seeds and boasts processing speeds that are up to 250% faster.

| Shading: New Turbulent Color Noise OSL Shader

The OSL toolset in 3ds Max has been enhanced with the addition of the Turbulent Color Noise shader, designed to replicate natural phenomena like oil films or to generate abstract rainbow effects.

| Character Rigging: Enhanced Control Over Skin Weights

Character artists will benefit from new parameters in the Paint Weights feature of the Skin Modifier, making it easier to control painting strength for skin weights using [Shift] + [Alt], addressing previous oversensitivity issues.

| Rendering and Pipeline Integration: OIDN Denoising Enabled by Default in Arnold

Updates to the integration plugins for Autodesk's Arnold renderer and Substance materials include enabling OIDN denoising in Arnold by default with MAXtoA 5.7.1.1. This version adds snapshot functionality to the Arnold RenderView and allows the RenderView to be docked, while supporting the latest features from Arnold 7.3.1. Additionally, Substance for 3ds Max 3.0 introduces support for the Substance 3D Connector, Adobe's new open-source framework for data transfer between DCC applications.
