Autodesk has released the 3ds Max 2025.3 update, enhancing the software's performance, particularly with the Array modifier. The latest documentation details new features, including support for OpenPBR, a collaborative open material standard aimed at improving interoperability between 3D applications, now accessible within 3ds Max and its Arnold renderer integration.
This update primarily focuses on performance enhancements and workflow improvements, notably a 20% to 50% increase in speed for the Boolean Modifier and a 50% to 210% boost for the Array Modifier. Additionally, bug fixes address long-standing issues within the CAT and Biped animation toolsets.
| Key Features: OpenPBR Material Standard
The most significant addition is OpenPBR, designed as a unified successor to Autodesk's Standard Surface and Adobe's Standard Material, offering superior sheen and metal reflectivity modeling. In 3ds Max, OpenPBR materials are available through the Slate and Compact Material Editors, complete with presets for various real-world materials.
| Arnold Renderer Enhancements
The OpenPBR standard is also integrated into Arnold for 3ds Max 5.7.5.0, which introduces updates to Ramp shaders, including new 3D ramp modes and procedural noise options. The Tonemap imager now features a heatmap mode, and volume rendering has been refined for enhanced visualization in the viewport, along with improved light scattering controls. The OIDN denoiser is supported on both AMD and NVIDIA GPUs, enhancing rendering performance in complex scenes.
| USD for 3ds Max Improvements
The update to USD for 3ds Max 0.9 introduces editing capabilities for USD prim properties within the Modify panel and snapping features for USD mesh prims in the viewport. Users can now import USD Curves as 3ds Max Shapes, streamlining workflows further. For detailed changes, please refer to the release notes.
